Student Instructions

Being able to communicate with others is an important part of our daily lives. We talk to our friends, chat on the phone, send emails and use Facetime or Zoom. We don't always give these things very much thought, because they are part of our every day lives. But what would happen if you couldn't talk? We have people in our communities who may be deaf or mute or have other communication difficulties. How do they communicate? In Australia we use a system of sign language called Auslan. This system uses facial expressions and gestures to communicate. Your task is to learn seven simple Auslan signs and upload a video of yourself making the signs. This year has been challenging for people who have difficulties speaking or hearing. With many people wearing masks, the deaf community hasn't been able to lip read. While you may not personally know any people who have these challenges, you never know when knowing a few simple signs could come in handy. Watch the video attached to learn the signs. Film yourself using the seven signs. *Are you okay? *Yes *No *I'm smiling *I'm sad *I need help *Thank you When you have finished, come back to the activity, click add and upload your video or click add and film yourself in the Seesaw app.

For more information on Australia Sign Language, the video came from Expression Australia and was shared on the ABC Melbourne Facebook page. https://www.expression.com.au/ Thanks also to my cousin Jacinta for sharing the video on Facebook as that was my inspiration for this task. It may not directly relate to our curriculum, but it's a great task for students at the end of a busy term.
