Often, henna art is painted onto hands as part of the celebration of Diwali. This is called Mehndi. Mehndi is part of the celebration of Diwali, but it's also said to be a general good luck charm - Indian weddings have a Mehndi ceremony the night before the wedding. It's a way of wishing the bride good health and prosperity.
