This painting ‘Vertumnus’ was created by Giuseppe Arcimboldo. Giuseppe Arcimboldo (1526 or 1527 – July 11, 1593) was an Italian painter best known for creating imaginative portrait heads made entirely of objects such as fruits, vegetables, flowers, fish, and books. Students are exposed to the many paintings by Arcimboldo. They then practice carefully studying and drawing various fruit and vegetables either from books, iPads, laptops or posters. Finally they are given a head outline to fill in with fruit and vegetables in the same way as the artist. Some students may prefer a blank paper to design their own head outlines.
