Make a Ten to Add with Quick Tens

Years: 2nd Grade
Subjects: Math
Standards: Add up to four two-digit numbers and subtract two-digit numbers using mental strategies and algorithms based on knowledge of place value and properties of operations. (Math.2.4(B))

Student Instructions

The first slide is an example. Use the Make 10 to Add strategy to expand the smaller number. For example: in 9 + 6, you would expand 6 into 1 and 5 Then move the pieces to build each number while making a ten. In the above example, you would move 9 circles over then 1 X to complete the ten. The rest of the smaller number, or Xs, will be added to the 10 for the total to type into the answer.
