El Arroyo has been in business since 1975. They serve Tex-Mex cuisine and are known for their entertaining marquee sign at the corner of West 5th and Campbell in Austin, Texas. People drive by daily to read the message of the day. Although the words may be few, the message is many, deep, and often times punny. What is a pun you ask? It's a play on words often containing double meanings (EX: Time flies like an arrow. Fruit flies like a banana.) For this activity, I want you to ANALYZE....as in think deeply, or critically about the message on each sign. Think about what it means and then explain the message on each page. DIRECTIONS: 1. Of the ten signs, you will choose four to analyze. 2. Read the message on the first page you chose. Think deeply about it meaning (remember the iceberg -- the answer might not be literally right in front of you, it may require some grit)! If you are stuck, what resources are available to you to help figure it out? A dictionary? Classmate? Google? 3. Once you've determined the sign's meaning, explain it to me in great detail using proper conventions and AT LEAST FOUR sentences. 4. Remember, you are choosing four signs, so that's a minimum of 16 sentences for this activity. 5. Read over your sentences and if you are happy with them as is, please press the to submit.
